The background

I’ve been playing God of War 4 and God of War Ragnarok for MANY HOURS, so feel like I’m a pretty good player, I’m certainly confident but by no means the worlds greatest player. I have been playing Ragnarok upto this point in “no mercy” mode, and approached this boss as a level 8 Kratos, with maxed out weapons.

When Mimir introduces the three bosses “Hromundr the cruel, Svipdagr the cold, and Vöttr the Prideful”, you have no idea of the world of hurt you are about to experience.

You have a companion (in my case Atreus), and you are a legendary God, not just a God but a God of War, The ghost of sparta who wiped out an entire pantheon of greek God’s! You’ve got full health, full rage, and have the reflexes of a cat to boot.

So you’d be right in thinking, that this is just another walk in the park, a bit of a laugh and fun distraction from the end days which is Ragnarok, but you’d be wrong!

It seems to start off well - you tear into Svipdagr the cold as Mimir introduces them, even taking a chunk of the Sisters with it. Then you go toe to toe with Svipdagr, shooting down the odd blob projectile (which can be either ice or fire based), and you watch as Svipdagr’s health melts away, while the God of War’s health is 100% intact. You are commanding this battle without doubt, and it feels proper.

Then it happens - BOOM - as if punched in the face by a train, you get smacked by a ice projectile while you were focusing on the fire projectile as Svipdagr is charging toward you AT THE SAME TIME. GAME OVER, you’re dead.

Shock and Awe

Ok you think, it’s a matter of learning the routine! I’ll get them next time!! Then 60 deaths later you realise, not only is this leading no where, but you seem to die when Svipdagr’s health hits the last 25%. Remembering the routine doesn’t work, because all 3 of the bosses spam you with overwhelming force. If you ever heard of “shock and awe” of the 2003 Iraq invasion, you now know how this feels personally after fighting these three fools.

You might think that changing strategy is the saving grace, but it isn’t. Just try focusing on the sisters instead of Svipdagr, and you get ridden hard. Svipdagr is like a fly on manure, she will NOT relent, and no matter how fast you run, her attacks move far faster. She will defend her comrades with all her being, and she does.

At one point I literally blamed Atreus! “BOY! WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE IN ALL OF THIS!?” As it seems the sisters could care less about him, and would rather tear you a new one. I then began to question Kratos’ Godhood - “Bro what kind of God are you who gets owed by 3 female freaks!?”.

OK Jay, we get it but HOW DO YOU BEAT THEM!?

You’re going to lose respect for me as a gamer here, but I beat the three freaks by LOWERING THE DIFFICULTY TO STORY MODE. I say this with pride, because this boss fight deserves the same respect it showed me: NONE. Even lowering it to story mode I died the first time, but I was very tired emotionally and physically.

If I were to review this supremely unfair, full of glitches boss fight, I’d give it a minus 10 out of 10. I am in my mid 40’s and can attest that this is the worst designed boss fight in history of gaming. Its like the “diverse team” at Santa Monice Studios would rather talk about inclusivity, and wave rainbow flags, than spend time actually figuring out innovative ways to make a game uniquely challenging.

I still think the game overall is great, but this boss fight is a real stinker.
